What affects delivery time, and how to read the estimate

If you are used to apps with a moving dot on a map, ordering by WhatsApp can feel like flying blind. You get a price and an estimated time before you confirm, and then a courier appears. Knowing what happens in between helps you judge whether a quote is reasonable and when it makes sense to send a message. Livreur 24h, our round-the-clock courier, gives you both figures up front, so the decision stays with you.
Five stages hidden in one number
Any delivery run breaks down into separate legs, and each can stretch on its own:
- Taking the order, which goes faster when your message already holds the address and full item list.
- The courier's ride to the restaurant, pharmacy or grocery.
- Preparation by the merchant, or the search for the product.
- The ride from the shop to your address.
- The final metres, with parking, the intercom, a lift, or an alley on foot.
You have a good deal of influence over the first and last of these. The other three play out on the road or in a kitchen.
Kitchen queues and the dish you choose
A busy restaurant works through tickets in order, and a courier's ticket does not jump ahead of the tables in the dining room. What you order matters as well. Pizza depends on oven space, and sushi gets assembled piece by piece. For instance, a sushi platter ordered in Marrakech is typically made to order, which is worth factoring in when you are in a hurry.
Livreur 24h is a delivery intermediary, so it has no control over merchant preparation time and does not answer for it. You can still send a WhatsApp message to ask how the run is going.
The clock and the calendar
The same order behaves differently at noon, at 8 p.m. and at 3 a.m. Around mealtimes, kitchens are stretched and roads are full. Very late at night the traffic thins out, but the nearest open kitchen may be further away, which cancels part of the gain.
The Moroccan calendar adds its own patterns. During the holy month, the rhythm of the day moves around iftar, known locally as ftour, and our piece on timing your order during Ramadan looks at this. In the same way, shifted opening hours on public holidays can narrow your choice of shops and lengthen trips.
Distance and traffic across the city
Two addresses in one city can get very different times. Imagine a restaurant in Guéliz, Marrakech: Hivernage is a short ride away, while the same order heading out to the Palmeraie needs a far longer one. In the Médina, the courier sometimes parks and finishes on foot through the lanes.
In Rabat, a dinner picked up in Agdal for Hay Riad is another matter from one going two streets over. When you search for dinner from somewhere close in Rabat, picking a restaurant in your own district is the most direct way to cut the trip. Fees also vary with distance and address, which gives you a second reason to look nearby.
Pharmacy stock
Medicine runs add one more variable: the product has to be on the shelf. At night, only on-duty pharmacies serve customers, and the box you need may not be there. The service locates the nearest active pharmacy from the prescription photo you send. If the medicine is out of stock, the length of the run changes, and no courier can promise availability. Any question about alternatives belongs with the pharmacist or your doctor.
How to read the time you are quoted
The figures in our frequently asked questions are indicative averages that vary with traffic and distance:
- 35 to 45 minutes for most meals, pizza and fast food;
- 45 minutes to 1 hour for pharmacy orders, depending on medicine availability.
The time given for your specific order counts for more than those averages, as it reflects your address and the current hour. Treat it as an estimate, and leave some margin if you have somewhere to be. If it does not suit you, say so before you confirm: you can switch to another restaurant or drop the order. Cancelling is free until the courier heads to the shop, and after that a travel fee may apply. If the estimate has passed, send a message instead of waiting in silence, such as:
Hello, the order for Massira was due around now. Could you tell me where the courier is? I am reachable on this number.
Minutes you can save yourself
A few habits trim the part of the wait that depends on you:
- put the full address and your WhatsApp location in your first message;
- name a second choice in case the restaurant is closed or swamped;
- group your items into one order, since a string of follow-up messages slows things down;
- keep your phone close and have cash ready, because this is cash on delivery.
Foreign visitors can add one more: if the address is hard to spell, send a location pin and a photo of the building entrance. When every minute counts, a complete first message on WhatsApp is the easiest lever you have.
